The Peshitta Bible

This is the Peshitta of 1886. It contains the New Testament.

Please be advised, that with all ancient texts, one must be careful and view it together with other editions/reprints (in case some text is lost or unreadable due to age etcetera). However, this does not reduce the pleasure of reading the original and ancient texts!

Please also be advised, that to ensure speedy download and reading, the Bible/book has been embedded (as Adobe pdf) – whilst it is downloading you will see a progress bar. However, before the download completes, if you scroll up or down, during this time, the page WILL look a bit weird. Wait till it downloads and all will be OK.

The Original Bible or book is below:

(Sometimes the Bible/book does not load, just change the page number and then retry the original page or refresh the web page)

This Is Page Number:

If you do not see the book on this page it is probably because Google Docs has not loaded it. Please either refresh the page or change the page number and it should start to work.

Index of the book (please forgive any unreadable bits: this index is computer generated from ancient texts):

  1. I can see you trimmed the Google scan.  That is perfectly legal since the book is public-domain, and I kind of like it, as I always find the Google watermark is really annoying, especially in Bible pages.  However, I must point out that due to recompression the quality is even worse here than the Google scan, which is not very good itself, and sometimes you trimmed a page too much in order to remove a Google watermark.  For example, in Peshitta1886_Part194.pdf the last line was broken: nē in mhaymnē should have two dots below, but the lower dot is trimmed out in your version. If one doesn’t mind the Google watermark, has a better, downloadable versions, not only in PDF but also in DjVu.

  2. Thanks for those comments. Could you kindly have a look at what other pages have lost text? We will then take special care to restore those pages. As for recompression, are you talking about the mobile version or the pdf version? Thanks.

  3. The lowest line of the page is broken in your version in the following pages.  Page numbers are original ones.  This list is not 100% exhaustive, but maybe like 80-90%.

Images in this ZIP is in the JPEG 2000 format.  As a side note, Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Bonn has good scans of some (different) versions of Syriac Bible online.

  4. Hi,We have now improved the version so as to ensue integrity of the text. Hope all is OK now? When we have some time we should have a look at Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Bonn. Thanks.

  5. You’re so nice! I’ll check it when I have time. Thanks so much. Since that Google logo is rather bothering, I prefer your version even if it’s recompressed. Keep up the great work!

  6. Your NEW and or Improved Version
    cannot assess my system,
and identify, that I have a Version of Adobe PDF on my Computer!
So, as the case may be, it has worked, on all of my three (3)
    systems? Why not Yours.
    Do you NOT allow Downloads?

    1. Hi,

When I have some time I should have a look at the script that checks the version. But using Adobe DC version all works!

Regarding downloading please see the Download a Bible link at the top for details.
